Windows 10 is Coming – What You should Know

July 1, 2015

windows 10 omahaIts seems like just yesterday Windows 8 was released and for most users, it was not well received. It had installation issues and didn’t work properly with many existing programs and devices. Then came Windows 8.1, and 8.1.1 etc. Endless updates and still many users who don’t just walk, but run away from Windows 8.

Say hello to Windows 10. On July 29th, 2015 Microsoft will release this “free” to most existing Windows users. Unfortunately, Microsoft has been incredibly slow and vague with all the exact details of how this will work in the short term and long term. Below I will post the information we know and update this post as I learn and confirm new information about Windows 10.

The simple answer: As always – hold off on any operating system upgrades until your 100% sure it will work with your computer, applications and any existing devices. This will save you headaches and the possibility of data loss, down time and unnecessary repairs.

What is Windows 10: Windows 10 is a entirely new version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It follows Windows 8, 7, Vista and XP.

When is Windows 10 available and how much does it cost: The official version becomes available to the general public on July 29, 2015. The pricing as of 7/1/2015 is: free to Windows 7 & 8 users for 1 years from release date. Upgrades after the 1 year date and retail copies  will cost:

  • Windows 10 Home: $119.00
  • Windows 10 Pro: $199.00
  • Windows 10 Home to Pro Pack: $99.00

Where do you get Windows 10: Prior to the July 29, 2015 launch date, you need to reserve your copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft directly. Here is a link to the official Microsoft page to clearly show you how to do this. After the July 29, 2015 launch date you will still need to use windows update to receive your free upgrade or visit a authorized Microsoft store to purchase a retail copy of Windows 10.

Why would you want Windows 10:

  • If you enjoy being on the cutting edge and having the latest software & applications
  • If you have a Windows 10 phone and/or tablet and want to enjoy a continuous experience on all your devices
  • If you enjoy learning new tips, tricks and exploring new features
  • If your a tech junkie or enjoy trying new things out and submitting feedback to Microsoft while tinkering with problems and showing off features to others
  • If your simply tired of Windows 7 or 8 and just want to move on to something new and hopefully improved

Why wouldn’t you want Windows 10:

  • If you do not like change or learning new things
  • If you cannot afford the potential downtime or loss of data due to a failed upgrade
  • If you have a office with many users and devices. The upgrade time for all will be tremendous if not planed properly and carried out by experienced technicians.
  • If you cannot afford the possibility of upgrading your printers, network and computers that do not work with Windows 10

Do you need Windows 10:

It truly depends. Each Windows Operating system has a end of life date. Meaning a date when Microsoft no longer supports it. That’s when Yes – you need a new operating system to be secure. Here are the posted end of life dates for Windows 7 & 8. Keep in mind Windows XP was discontinued in 2014.

  • Windows Vista: April 11, 2017
  • Windows 7: January 14, 2020
  • Windows 8.1: January 20, 2023

Should you install Windows 10 now or later:

This is purely ones opinion. Historically whenever a new operating system comes out there are many bugs and initial issues. Those generally get worked out and fixed after the initial users report these bugs to Microsoft. Again if you are a person who enjoys the latest technology then July 29, 2015 cannot come fast enough. If your a person who likes to play it safe and doesn’t enjoy change, then you have plenty of time to decide later if Windows 10 is for you.
