What to Bring to Your Computer Repair Visit (And What You Can Leave at Home)

Bringing your computer in for repair shouldn’t be stressful. One of the most common questions we hear at Special Touch Computer Repair is:

“What do I actually need to bring?”

The answer depends on the problem you’re having. Bringing the right items helps us diagnose your issue faster, avoid delays, and get your computer back to you as quickly as possible.

Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare.

If Your Computer Won’t Turn On

Bring:

  • Your computer
  • The power adapter or charging cable
  • Any error notes or symptoms you’ve noticed

Don’t worry about bringing your keyboard, mouse, monitor, or printer unless they’re part of the problem.

If You’re Having Charging Problems

Bring:

  • Your laptop
  • Your charger

Many charging issues are caused by a faulty power adapter rather than the computer itself. Having both allows us to test everything.

If Your Desktop Has Display Issues

Bring:

  • The desktop tower
  • Power cable

Only bring your monitor if:

  • The monitor won’t turn on.
  • You believe the monitor is causing the issue.
  • You’re unsure whether the problem is the computer or the display.

Printer Problems?

If your printer isn’t connecting, printing, or scanning, bring:

  • Your computer
  • The printer (if it’s reasonably portable)
  • USB cable (if applicable)

If it’s a large office printer, give us a call first. In many cases, an on-site service appointment is the better option.

Internet or Wi-Fi Problems

Usually, you only need:

  • Your computer

If we determine your router or modem may be involved, we’ll let you know what else to bring or schedule an on-site visit.

Data Recovery

Trying to recover files from:

  • A failed computer
  • An old hard drive
  • A USB flash drive
  • An external hard drive
  • An SD card

Bring the storage device itself. If the computer is still available, bringing it can sometimes improve recovery options.

Password or Email Problems

Bring:

  • Your computer
  • Any usernames or email addresses you know
  • Passwords if available

If you’ve forgotten passwords, don’t panic. We’ll walk you through the recovery process whenever possible.

New Computer Setup or Data Transfer

Bring:

  • Your old computer
  • Your new computer
  • Power adapters for both

This helps us transfer your files, pictures, documents, and other important data more efficiently.

Things You Usually Don’t Need to Bring

Most of the time, you can leave these at home:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Speakers
  • Webcam
  • Printer
  • Ethernet cables
  • USB hubs
  • Boxes and packaging

Unless one of these items is directly causing the issue, they generally aren’t needed for diagnosis.

Before You Visit

A few minutes of preparation can save time:

  • Write down any error messages.
  • Note when the problem started.
  • Bring chargers for laptops.
  • Remove CDs, DVDs, or USB drives you don’t need.
  • Back up important files if your computer is still working.

Not Sure What to Bring?

That’s perfectly okay.

Give Special Touch Computer Repair a quick call before your visit. We’ll tell you exactly what you need based on your specific issue, helping you avoid carrying unnecessary equipment.

Our goal is simple: make your repair experience as fast, easy, and stress-free as possible.
